Our highly trained team of surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation specialists and various medical support personnel work with each patient (and his or her primary care physician) to develop an individualized treatment plan specifically for that patient. By combining extensive clinical expertise with a compassionate, caring treatment philosophy, we have created a program known for its quality of care.
Stamford Hospital's Human Motion Institute has highly skilled, specially trained surgeons credentialed in areas of total joint replacement, sports medicine, spine, neurosurgery, trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Spine
Back pain related to injury or congenital conditions is a common health complaint, which can be extremely debilitating. Stamford Hospital's Human Motion Institute treats the full spectrum of back pain, with a comprehensive spine program for medical management and surgical intervention, including treatment for scoliosis. We have a team of orthopedic and neurosurgeons specializing in the most advanced surgical spine treatments - including minimally invasive surgery, artificial disc replacement and scoliosis treatment. Our team of surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, pain-management specialists and physiatrists work together to develop an individualized care plan for each patient, including post-surgical care and/or ongoing treatment for chronic conditions.
Foot and Ankle Pain
Eighty percent of Americans will suffer from some form of foot or ankle pain during their lives. This pain can be caused by an injury, ill-fitting shoes, diseases such as arthritis and diabetes, poor circulation, genetic abnormalities, or simply wear and tear. No matter what the cause, the result can be the same: discomfort and limited mobility. Treatment options for foot and ankle pain vary, and can include physical therapy, orthotics, braces and - possibly - surgery to correct injuries and conditions related to age, trauma or both.
Hand and Upper Extremity
Reaching, grabbing, writing, driving, lifting - even waving - are all activities we take for granted - that is, until we are inhibited by pain. All of these seemingly simple daily activities - and many, many others - are made possible by the versatility and flexibility of the shoulder, arm and hand. This part of the human body is uniquely complex and includes the joints, bones and muscles of the fingers, hand, wrist, arm, elbow and shoulder. Their intricate and mobile design, coupled with daily use and abuse, can make these vital parts of the body highly susceptible to injury. At the Human Motion Institute at Stamford Hospital, we have fellowship-trained hand surgeons. They are highly specialized in the assessment and surgical and non-surgical treatment of injuries and conditions of the hand, elbow and arm - the entire upper extremity.
Total Joint Replacement and Reconstruction
Today, Americans are enjoying longer, more active lives than at any time in history. Yet our bodies age as we do, and a lifetime of activity and occasional abuse takes its toll, sometimes causing pain in the joints and muscles. Painful, stiff joints can keep you from the activities you enjoy, not to mention the daily activities of living, such as dressing, bathing and walking. We are committed to fast, accurate diagnosis, and work to develop an individualized plan of care fitting the unique needs of each patient suffering from joint pain or discomfort.
Taking care of a severely injured or diseased joint involves more than simply applying state-of-the-art surgical techniques. Skilled hands-on evaluation and appropriate diagnostic testing is the most effective way to determine the best overall plan of care - remembering, of course, that we are not treating a joint, but a human being.
We always begin with the most conservative and noninvasive treatments before considering surgery. However, if and when a surgical procedure becomes the right choice, we have a highly skilled team of surgical specialists. We also have outstanding clinical and patient-satisfaction results. Our Joint Care clinical team works together to properly evaluate each patient's condition, and ensure that patients are mentally and physically prepared for surgery. We continuously monitor and manage the entire pre- and post-surgical period, including progress through rehabilitation. This full-service approach, which integrates the patient's primary-care physician and surgeon with a host of clinical support staff, is designed to return patients to maximum function as quickly and safely as possible. Our surgical team has the ability to replace all major joints.
- Total hip and knee replacement
- Minimally invasive joint replacement
- Knee resurfacing and reconstruction
- Total shoulder and reverse shoulder replacement
- Hip fractures
Pediatric Injuries and Issues
Our orthopedic specialists care for most pediatric injuries and conditions related to normal growth and development, trauma, and sports-related injuries. Many of our surgeons are team physicians at local public and private middle and high schools.
Sports Medicine
Stamford Hospital's Human Motion Institute provides services and programs that help prevent and treat injuries and conditions affecting bones, muscles and joints.
Taking care of a sports injury used to mean applying an ice pack, a heating pad, an Ace bandage - or a dry, itchy cast. Medical and technological advances have brought about change. Today, sturdy (yet flexible) braces have largely taken the place of Ace bandages, and light, breathable casts have replaced itchy plaster. Yet treating an injured athlete involves more than just applying a sophisticated brace. At the Human Motion Institute at Stamford Hospital, we combine skilled hands-on evaluation and appropriate diagnostic testing to determine the best overall plan of care. And we always remember that children are not just small adults; they have unique requirements. Many of our surgeons are fellowship trained in sports medicine from top programs across the country. They specialize in treatment of athletes of all ages and levels - from the high-school field-hockey player to adult athletes and weekend warriors. Further, gender differences can also affect the type and severity of injuries sustained in athletics. At the Human Motion Institute at Stamford Hospital, we're fully aware of that reality - and we treat our patients with knowledge of those differences in mind.
